Did you know that July was originally named Quintilis but renamed, in 44 B.C., for Julius Caesar? July's birthstone is the ruby, said to surpass all other stones in both virtue and value. The Hindus referred to the ruby as the king of precious stones and sorted the stones according to quality. When doing so, they were careful not to let inferior stones come in contact with more superior ones, as they believed this would diminish the great powers of the better quality stones. They believed that all who gave rubies to the god, Krishna, would, in the future, be reincarnated as royalty. Like other gemstones, rubies were believed to possess medicinal properties and were even used for disinfectant purposes. Rubies are credited with the power to settle disputes and provide for amicable reconciliation and, for those born in the month of July, provide contentment.
